Program a Soundbar Remote or Use TV Remote: How

Short answer: Start with HDMI ARC and enable CEC on both the TV and soundbar; the TV remote will then control power and volume. If that is not available, use the soundbar's IR learning or manual code function. If neither works, pair via the soundbar app.

Try CEC first

When people ask how to program a soundbar remote to a TV remote, the answer is often that no programming is needed. Connect the soundbar to your TV through the HDMI ARC or eARC port, enable HDMI control or CEC on both devices, and your TV remote handles power, mute and volume for the soundbar.

CEC is the part of an HDMI connection that passes commands between devices. On TVs it is often called HDMI Control rather than CEC, and on older TVs it may not exist at all. If your TV lacks CEC, skip to the infrared method below.

See HDMI ARC vs eARC for the difference between the two audio return connections, and soundbar HDMI connections for a full overview of ports.

What CEC does

CEC, or Consumer Electronics Control, is a control channel carried by the HDMI cable. It lets one device send commands to other devices in the same chain. With a soundbar, that means the TV remote can tell the soundbar to turn on, turn off, mute, and change volume without pointing directly at the bar.

HDMI is the common wired connection for soundbars and TVs. When both devices use HDMI ARC or eARC, the audio signal and the CEC commands travel over the same cable. If you have not connected through the ARC-labeled port, the TV remote may not see the soundbar at all.

Industry standards, such as those developed with input from the Consumer Technology Association, are part of why TVs and soundbars from different brands can recognize each other's remote commands. Your soundbar should list its own control setting in the setup menu or companion app.

Enable CEC step by step

Making the TV remote control the soundbar usually takes a few menu changes:

Once CEC is active, the TV remote sends volume and power commands to the soundbar. Many soundbars also appear in the TV's input menu, so you can switch between sources on the bar. If your TV and soundbar still do not communicate, check the soundbar TV compatibility guide for common reasons.

  • Connect the soundbar to the TV's HDMI ARC or eARC port. A regular HDMI port may not carry control signals.
  • On the TV, open settings and turn on HDMI Control, CEC, or the name your TV brand uses for it.
  • On the soundbar, enable the same control setting in its own menu or app.
  • Set the TV audio output to the external speaker or audio system option, not TV speaker.
  • Restart the TV and soundbar. After reconnecting, the TV should list the soundbar in its connected devices.

No CEC? Use infrared codes

Older TVs and some basic soundbars do not support CEC. In that case, you can program the soundbar remote itself to control the TV, or use the soundbar's learning mode to copy commands from the TV remote.

A learning remote is the most flexible. Put the soundbar remote into learning or programming mode, place it facing the TV remote, and press the buttons you want to copy, such as volume up, volume down and mute. The soundbar stores those IR commands and uses them when you press those buttons.

The other method is a manual code. Soundbar manuals list codes for common TV brands. Find the code for your TV brand, enter it using the soundbar remote's keypad, and the soundbar will respond to the TV remote's IR signals. If neither method works, use the manufacturer's app to control the bar.

Check the soundbar remote connectivity guide for more on which soundbars accept universal or learned commands.

Bluetooth remotes and apps

Bluetooth is another way to control a soundbar. Bluetooth Classic radio creates point-to-point connections, which is how a TV remote, phone, or separate soundbar remote can pair with the bar. You usually hold a pairing button on the soundbar and select it in the TV remote's or phone's Bluetooth menu.

Companion apps are a useful backup. If the soundbar has a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth app, you can adjust input, sound modes, and volume from the phone, then keep the physical remote for other buttons. See soundbar app control and Bluetooth pairing troubleshooting for setup help.

Solve common sync problems

The most common reason the TV remote does not control the soundbar is that CEC is off. Check the TV and soundbar menus, then unplug both for a minute and reconnect. Some TVs enable CEC only after a restart.

For IR, line of sight matters. Keep the remote pointed at the soundbar and remove anything between them. If the manual code does not work, try the second code listed for your TV brand, or use learning mode if the remote supports it.

A firmware update can change how a soundbar handles remote commands. Many makers update CEC and remote behavior through downloads, so check the app or support page. See soundbar firmware updates and fix a soundbar remote for more.

Questions

Can my TV remote control my soundbar?

Yes, in most cases. Connect through HDMI ARC or eARC and enable CEC, or program the soundbar remote using IR learning or a manual TV code.

What is CEC on a soundbar?

CEC is the control channel inside an HDMI connection that carries power, volume and input commands. It is usually labeled HDMI Control in the TV menu.

Why doesn't my TV remote change soundbar volume?

Check that the soundbar is on the ARC-labeled port, CEC is enabled on both devices, and the TV audio output is set to the soundbar. Restart both devices and then test again.

Can I program a soundbar remote to work with my TV?

Many soundbar remotes have a learning mode or accept a TV brand code from the manual. If neither is available, use the manufacturer's app.

Does Bluetooth play a role in soundbar remotes?

Some soundbars pair with a TV remote, phone or separate remote over Bluetooth. Bluetooth Classic supports point-to-point connections between those devices and the bar.

What if CEC and IR codes both fail?

Use the soundbar's app for volume and input, update the firmware, and check the soundbar manual for a factory reset of remote settings.
